The Biodynamic Seed Company (BDSC) is a Demeter Certified not for profit organisation, run by volunteers, set up to facilitate Australian Demeter Biodynamic seed production and distribution within Australia. Our focus is on open pollinated commercial vegetable varieties that suit the needs of professional organic and biodynamic farmers.
BDSC was established by Australian Demeter Biodynamic farmers who are involved in the commercial seed, propagation, and vegetable growing industries. The company was established with the support of Australian Demeter Biodynamic organisations, the Biodynamic Agricultural Association of Australia (BDAAA), the Biodynamic Marketing Company (BDMC) and the Biodynamic Growers Association (BDGA).
The Biodynamic Seed Company arose out of the increasing need for commercial quality vegetable seed that would meet certification standards. This was important due to the low level of commercially suitable varieties available in Australia for certified growers and the difficulty in importing seed of many important commercial varieties. The industry for certified vegetable seed production within Australia was not well developed which meant suitable certified seed was simply not available for a significant number of important commercial crops.
In response BDSC began by building relationships with international BD/organic vegetable breeders that were interested in providing suitable genetics to BDSC in order to trial, produce, maintain and distribute varieties within Australia. At present the BDSC has a working association with Kultursaat and Sativa Seeds in Europe and with Cornell University, The Organic Seed Alliance, and High Mowing Seeds, within the US.
The BDSC focuses specifically on the following:
* Obtaining suitable genetics for select varieties from experienced vegetable breeders.
* Trialling selected BDSC varieties against market standard hybrid varieties.
* Being responsible for genetic maintenance of the varieties.
* Contracting seed production to Demeter certified biodynamic producers.
* Providing facilities for centralised seed processing, cleaning and quality control.
* Pelleting seed to meet the requirements of the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce in Australia and the Australian Demeter Biodynamic standard.
* Handling the wholesale distribution of Demeter certified biodynamic seed to our seed retailer in Australia who then sells to farmers.
This approach allows the Biodynamic Seed Company to:
* Set a high quality standard for maintenance and production of varieties being newly introduced into Australia.
* Keep all production, processing and quality control certified to the Australian Demeter Biodynamic standard and the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce in Australia.
* Ensure a price point is set and maintained that is viable for the seed growers contracted to produce seed, creating worthwhile future opportunities and prospects for BD seed producers in Australia.
