Biodynamic Agriculture Introductory Lectures, Vol 1

LECTURE 1

Introduction – soil
The role played by plant roots
Humus
Converting a farm
How the plant feeds
Transpiration and photosynthesis
Effects of nitrates on cattle
Raw manures
The role of photosynthesis

The first of six biodynamic introductory lectures that have found wide use among Australian farmers. Whilst these lectures are down-to-earth and practical and discuss biodynamic fundamentals, they do not give a detailed description of the application of biodynamics.

Experience has shown that for an introduction to effective practice of the biodynamic method direct instruction and initial supervision is necessary. In Australia, a wide-ranging advisory service has developed for this purpose. It functions along self-help lines.

The four kingdoms of nature & the three fold activity in plants, animal & man.

Fundamental to our Bio-Dynamic activities and practices is the understanding that a plant is not isolated and grown only from the minerals in soil. The growing of plants is affected by two polar sets of environmental influences termed terrestrial and cosmic growth factors. It is from the cosmic growth factors that plants derive their fine fragrance, flavour and deep rich colours.

Developing farmer individuality and active perception

Alex Podolinsky’s book “Active Perception” provides training in developing the skills related to viewing the living process behind a given physical situation. While good farmers do this automatically (otherwise they would not still be farming) the exercises in “Active Perception” allow this process to be brought to consciousness.

Cosmo – earth ecology & green manure

Truly natural plants, not force filled with salt through water soluble fertilisers of conventional or organic origins and therefore absorbing inadequate Sun Energy, can again sufficiently enrichen soil from outside of Earth. – Obviously, such is also financially rewarding.

Chaos & Vortex

Watch good stirring and you will see beautiful streaks. It is not an even surface. They are like coils winding down inside each vortex. When the stirring machine or vessel is too large, these veins don’t adequately occur. The veins are part of what drags the oxygen in, what enlivens the whole action.

A method to meet the needs of today

The current conventional farming system is based on Justus Von Liebig’s discovery that plants can take in only water soluble elements. This has led to the conventional system being increasingly hydroponic – almost totally disregarding soil and Nature’s organization.
